JOTA to Test Isa bin Abdullah Al Khalifa in Bahrain WEC Rookie Test
13th December 2019
Leading British endurance racing team JOTA will test local driver Isa bin Abdullah Al Khalifa in the Jackie Chan DC Racing car during this weekend’s FIA World Endurance Championship’s rookie test at Bahrain.
Bahrain native Isa will get track time in the No. 37 Oreca 07 Gibson in the official WEC rookie test at Bahrain International Circuit on Sunday, 15 December. The test takes place the day after the 8 Hours of Bahrain, the fourth round of the 2019-20 WEC season.
Isa has already built up a packed and impressive resume with experience in a number of different forms of motorsport, including the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East.
He competed in Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East for the past three seasons, taking part in races at Bahrain International Circuit, which he lists as his favourite racetrack, Dubai Autodrome and Yas Marina Circuit.
Last month, Isa was a standout driver in the Pure McLaren GT Series event at Bahrain, winning one race and finishing runner-up in another, while setting the fastest overall race lap of the weekend.
In addition to his successes in GT cars, Isa has also tested Formula 2 and Formula 3 cars in the past two years, but will make his debut in prototypes with JOTA on Sunday.
The WEC rookie test gives teams the opportunity to run up-and-coming promising drivers like Isa in the same cars that battled for victory over eight hours of racing on the previous day, while drivers get the experience of working in the WEC paddock.
Five hours of track time will be available on Sunday, with sessions running from 10:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 16:00 local time.
Before the rookie test, JOTA’s focus lies on Saturday’s race, where it will enter its two full-season Oreca LMP2 cars, running on Goodyear tyres.
The team claimed a historic one-two finish last time out in the 4 Hours of Shanghai and heads to Bahrain with the same driver line-ups of Ho-Pin Tung, Gabriel Aubry and Will Stevens in the No. 37 Jackie Chan DC Racing car, and Roberto Gonzalez, Antonio Felix da Costa and Anthony Davidson in the No. 38 JOTA-entered car.
“We are delighted to welcome Isa to JOTA for the rookie test on Sunday at the Bahrain International Circuit which is of course his home circuit.
“He will receive a warm welcome from the team and will get tremendous technical and sporting advice from each member of the team.
“We have followed his progress in motorsport and we believe that his ambition and skill will be enhanced by his runs in the JOTA LMP2 car.”
Isa bin Abdullah Al Khalifa:
“I’m thrilled to get the chance to test JOTA’s Oreca LMP2 car in the WEC rookie test and to do so at my home track makes the opportunity even better. While the car is new to me, I know the circuit very well and hope to use my knowledge to put on a good performance on Sunday. It’s also an honour to work with JOTA, a team with so much experience in endurance racing and a number of highly successful drivers in their race line-up.”
